PhD Program in Experimental Surgery and Microsurgery
The PhD program in experimental surgery and microsurgery was designed to cover a broad range of interest, from general surgery to most subspecialties. It includes anesthesiology and experimental biology as well, for the multisciplinary needs of modern research. The faculty members are distinguished scholars from several disciplines of traditional and innovative surgical fields (new technologies I surgery, stem cells and regeneration, robotic and minimally invasive surgery). In-house cooperations and national or international agreements have been set for shared courses in the European Union
Aims
This doctorate has the administrative structure of a consortium among the universities of Pavia, Genova and Turin. The PhD program has two main targets:
To offer a unique opportunity of involvement in several exciting fields of scientific research
To promote the academic research in order to foster the role of the University
Main research fields
Most significant research areas
Induction of tolerance: experimental models for transplantation
Stem cells and regenerative medicine
Advanced techniques and technologies in surgery
Post-doc job opportunities
Hemodynamic monitoring and experimental anesthesiology
Nanotechnologies in surgery
Biomaterials and issues in compatibility
Courses
The PhD students get a personalized formative path, under the supervision of a faculty member of the scientific board. The courses are largely based on cooperative research activities. Formal lessons are offered as seminars or interactive courses. Researches, lectures, and cycles of lessons will be held at the experimental facility of the University of Pavia or at the Fondazione IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo, one of the largest italian hospitals.
After three years of training, the academic title will be released after a final dissertation, which is supposed to rely upon the candidate’s scientific results. Italian or English are welcome as official languages of the PhD program.
Professional perspectives and job opportunities
A PhD is quite accepted as a preferred title for medical professionals at research hospitals. Frequently a PhD is preliminary to an academic career. Also, there are job opportunities at private or public research facilities.
